Grace Wisher was a free-born Black girl from Baltimore, Maryland, who played a remarkable role in American history. Around 1810, at just 13 years old, she began a six-year apprenticeship with Mary Pickersgill, a white flag-maker renowned for her craft.
Together, they helped stitch the Star-Spangled Banner — the very flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write our national anthem during the War of 1812. Grace's skilled hands contributed to one of the most iconic symbols of American freedom.
Her story reminds us that Black Americans have always been woven into the fabric of this nation — literally and figuratively. At NJUSTUS, we carry that spirit forward, celebrating patriotism and freedom for all.

On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, making Juneteenth an official United States federal holiday. Following this historic action, states began flying the Juneteenth flag more widely, often over state capitols, elevating the flag’s national significance. Biden continues to issue annual Juneteenth Day of Observance proclamations, reaffirming the holiday and its symbols.
Opal Lee, known as the Grandmother of Juneteenth, dedicated her life to making Juneteenth a federal holiday. At age 89, she began a symbolic 1,400-mile walk from Fort Worth, Texas to Washington, D.C., building on her annual 2.5-mile walks that represent the two and a half years it took for freedom to reach enslaved people in Texas after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Her tireless advocacy helped secure the passage of the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act. On June 17, 2021, she stood beside President Joe Biden as he signed the bill into law, making Juneteenth an official United States federal holiday.
Her lifelong commitment to community service, historical preservation, and public advocacy continues to inspire millions. As Black Americans, we are called to honor Opal Lee’s journey by supporting nationwide Juneteenth observances.
